Arabica Coffee vs Robusta, Liberica and Excelsa
A clear comparison of arabica, robusta, liberica and excelsa coffee, plus what "100% arabica" actually promises on a label.
Arabica (Coffea arabica) is the coffee species behind most specialty coffee, including Jamaica Blue Mountain, and accounts for roughly the majority of world coffee production by volume. Its main rival, robusta, has close to double the caffeine and a harsher, more bitter cup; two rarer species, liberica and excelsa, fill smaller regional niches. "100% arabica" on a label rules out robusta, but it is not, by itself, a promise of quality.
What is Coffea arabica?
Coffea arabica is one of more than 120 known coffee species, but it is the one responsible for most of the coffee prized for complex flavor, aroma and acidity. Botanically, arabica is unusual among coffee species for being tetraploid (carrying four sets of chromosomes) and largely self-pollinating, traits that make it genetically less diverse than some other coffee species and part of why arabica plants can be more vulnerable to certain pests and diseases, including leaf rust and coffee berry disease. Arabica generally grows best at higher elevations and cooler temperatures than robusta, which is one reason mountain regions — from Ethiopia's highlands to Jamaica's Blue Mountains to Kenya's volcanic slopes — dominate arabica's best-known origins.
Arabica is generally understood, as discussed on the Ethiopian coffee page, to have originated in the highland forests of southwestern Ethiopia, the only place, along with adjacent South Sudan, where it still grows wild. Nearly every arabica variety grown commercially today — Typica, Bourbon and their many descendants — traces back to a narrow genetic sample that left Ethiopia centuries ago, which is why Ethiopia's remaining wild and heirloom arabica populations are considered such a valuable genetic reserve for the species as a whole.
What share of world coffee production is arabica?
Arabica has historically represented the majority of global coffee output, though the exact split shifts from year to year with weather and planting decisions. For the 2023/24 coffee year, the International Coffee Organization reported world production of roughly 178.0 million 60-kg bags, with Arabica accounting for about 102.2 million bags — near 57% of the total — and Robusta making up the remainder. Robusta's share has been gradually increasing in recent years as growers in some regions favor its higher yields and greater heat tolerance amid a changing climate, so arabica's historic dominance, while still real, is not guaranteed to hold at the same margin indefinitely.
That production split also maps loosely onto how coffee is sold. Robusta's lower cost and higher caffeine make it a mainstay of instant coffee and many budget blends, particularly outside North America, while arabica dominates the whole-bean, ground and specialty shelves most US shoppers are used to browsing. A shopper buying a bag labeled by origin — Colombian, Ethiopian, Kenyan or Jamaican — is, in practice, almost always buying arabica, whether or not the bag says so explicitly.
How is robusta different from arabica?
Robusta (Coffea canephora) is arabica's main commercial rival, grown mainly at lower, hotter elevations in countries including Vietnam and Brazil. The most-cited difference is caffeine: robusta beans generally contain roughly 2.2–2.7% caffeine by weight versus arabica's roughly 1.2–1.5%, meaning a robusta-based cup can deliver noticeably more caffeine than an arabica one of similar size. Robusta also has lower sugar and lipid content than arabica, which trade sources link to its harsher, more bitter, sometimes described as "rubbery" or grain-like flavor profile, compared with arabica's generally sweeter, more aromatic cup.
Robusta's higher caffeine content also functions as a natural pest deterrent, one reason the plant tends to be hardier and higher-yielding than arabica — a genuine agronomic advantage that comes at a cost to cup quality in most comparisons. Robusta plants also tolerate lower elevations and warmer temperatures better than arabica, and are generally more resistant to coffee leaf rust, a fungal disease that has caused serious losses on arabica farms in several countries over the past two decades. None of this makes robusta a lesser plant agronomically — it is simply optimized for different growing conditions and a different price point than arabica, and specialty-grade robusta does exist, though it remains a small share of what is traded.
What are liberica and excelsa coffee?
Liberica (Coffea liberica) and excelsa are two much rarer commercial coffee species, together accounting for a small fraction of world production. Liberica is a large tree, growing up to about 18 meters (59 ft), with oversized leaves and beans — the largest of any commercially grown coffee — originally from the rainforests of West Africa. Its cup is generally associated with a full-bodied, low-acid profile carrying smoky, woody and sometimes fruity or floral notes, distinct from arabica's brighter, more acidic character. Liberica also tolerates heat and humidity better than arabica and shows more resistance to coffee leaf rust, letting it grow in hot lowland conditions where arabica would struggle.
Liberica became historically significant in the Philippines, where it was introduced in the 1890s and is still grown today, locally known as "kapeng barako," meaning roughly "strong coffee." According to research on Philippine coffee production, liberica-type coffees account for a large majority of the country's total coffee output, though most is consumed domestically rather than exported, which is part of why liberica remains unfamiliar to many US coffee drinkers despite its long history.
Excelsa was long treated as its own species but recent botanical research, including genomic analysis involving researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, has reclassified it as a variety within the Liberica group — technically Coffea liberica var. dewevrei rather than a fully separate species. In the cup, excelsa is generally described as tart and notably fruitier than standard liberica, which is why some blenders use small amounts of it to add complexity, despite the two plants sharing a very similar tree structure and growing requirements. Both liberica and excelsa remain niche enough in the US market that a shopper is far more likely to encounter them at a specialty shop or online than on a supermarket shelf.
What does "100% arabica" mean on a label?
"100% arabica" is a factual claim about species, not a quality grade: it means the bag contains no robusta (or liberica or excelsa), and nothing more. The phrase became a popular marketing shorthand because arabica is genuinely associated with better average cup quality than robusta, and many lower-cost commercial blends do use robusta to cut cost and add body. But arabica quality still varies enormously by variety, growing altitude, processing and freshness — a poorly grown or stale arabica bag can taste worse than a well-selected blend. In practice, "100% arabica" is a useful baseline exclusion, not a substitute for knowing where and how the coffee was grown.
What are the major arabica varieties?
Within Coffea arabica sits a wide range of varieties, shaped by centuries of natural mutation and selective breeding.
- Typica: one of the two oldest cultivated arabica varieties, tracing back to coffee's spread from Ethiopia through Yemen and onward; many later varieties descend from it. Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is grown from Typica, cultivated on the island since coffee was first introduced there in 1728.
- Bourbon: the other foundational variety, named for the island (now Réunion) where it was cultivated after leaving East Africa; a common parent of many modern hybrid varieties.
- Geisha (Gesha): an Ethiopian-origin variety that became prominent in Panama's specialty market for its intensely floral, tea-like, citrus-forward cup; low-yielding but capable of commanding some of the highest prices in specialty coffee.
- SL28: a Kenyan selection from the 1930s, closely associated with the blackcurrant and bright-acidity character that defines much of Kenya's reputation.
- Caturra: a naturally occurring dwarf mutation of Bourbon, discovered in Brazil in the early 20th century; its compact size lets farmers plant more densely, and it remains widely grown across Latin America.
These are a small sample of a much larger catalog — the nonprofit World Coffee Research's variety catalog documents more than 50 distinct arabica varieties from coffee-growing countries worldwide — but they cover most of what a US buyer is likely to see named on specialty bags. Many newer varieties are hybrids or descendants of Typica and Bourbon: Caturra, for instance, has itself parented other varieties bred for disease resistance or yield, and Brazil's Mundo Novo arose from a natural cross between Bourbon and Typica. Knowing a coffee's variety does not by itself predict its taste — growing altitude, soil, processing and roast all shape the final cup — but it is one more data point, alongside region and processing method, that a specialty label can offer beyond the broad "arabica" claim.
Where does Jamaica Blue Mountain fit into arabica?
Jamaica Blue Mountain is, botanically, an example of Typica arabica — one of the oldest and most widely dispersed of the varieties above — grown on a single Jamaican estate above 3,400 ft in the Blue Mountains. What sets JBM apart from other Typica coffee is not the variety itself, since Typica is grown in many countries, but the combination of that variety with Jamaica's specific altitude, climate and a legally defined growing area. JBM is consistently described by growers and importers as mild and balanced, with low bitterness — a reputation that, like Geisha's floral intensity or SL28's blackcurrant snap, shows how much variety, terroir and processing can vary the cup within arabica alone, even before comparing arabica to other species.

How does arabica compare across origins?
Arabica's range shows up clearly across origin coffees: Colombian coffee is grown almost entirely from arabica and processed mostly washed for a consistent, medium-bodied cup; Ethiopian coffee draws on thousands of heirloom arabica varieties for some of the widest flavor variation of any origin; and Kenyan coffee, grown largely from SL28 and SL34, is known for unusually bright, wine-like acidity. Jamaica Blue Mountain, grown from Typica in a single legally defined region, adds a fourth reference point — one defined less by dramatic flavor and more by mildness and balance.
Put differently, all four of these are arabica, and none of them taste alike. That is the main practical lesson of the arabica-versus-robusta framing that dominates most coffee-bag marketing: species is only the first filter. Variety, altitude, processing and roast do the rest of the work in determining what actually ends up in the cup. Comparing arabica coffees side by side, rather than assuming "arabica" describes one taste, is the more useful way to shop; a whole bean selection is one place to start that comparison directly.
