About this coffee

Most of the world's celebrated single-origin coffees, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Colombian Supremo and Jamaica Blue Mountain among them, are usually roasted medium or lighter, on the theory that a gentler roast lets origin character show through. This box takes the same 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee in a different direction, dark roasted, closer to how a Sumatra or a diner-style Brazilian coffee is often treated.

The format is unchanged from the Original pods: pre-measured, single-serve, built to work in most Keurig-style brewers, so the only variable here is roast. A darker roast tends to push flavor toward the roast itself and away from the subtler traits a coffee's origin usually gets credit for, which is worth knowing if origin character is the reason you're drawn to this name in the first place.

Twelve pods make twelve cups, one pod per cup. That is enough for around two weeks at a cup a day, or a few days in a household getting through two or three cups daily. It suits drinkers who want Jamaica Blue Mountain's name and pedigree but prefer a roastier, fuller cup, especially with milk, over the delicate profile the coffee is usually praised for.

Questions about value

Why roast a coffee known for subtlety this dark?
Personal preference, mostly. Jamaica Blue Mountain's reputation rests on a mild, balanced cup, but a dark roast suits drinkers who want bolder flavor or usually add milk. It is a smaller share of what's sold under the name than medium roasts are.
Does dark roasting change how it compares with other coffees?
To an extent. A dark roast shifts flavor toward the roast itself and narrows the gap between this and other dark-roasted coffees generally. Buyers chasing the clearest sense of origin character usually reach for a medium roast instead.
How many cups are in the box?
Twelve, at one pod per cup, matching the Original 12-count box in quantity. The roast is the only recorded difference between the two boxes on this site.
